Tongue cancer may not be the most common form of this disease, but it is still responsible for around 6,800 cancer cases in the UK each year, according to NHS data.

The Express recently highlighted some of the most common symptoms of the disease, and stressed that people need to be more vigilant to ensure it is diagnosed early and treated effectively.

According to the newspaper, a persistent sore throat or a tongue ulcer or lump that doesn’t go away could be one of the early signs of tongue cancer.

It shared advice from Cancer Research UK about the most common signs of tongue cancer, which include pain when swallowing, numbness on the tongue that won’t go away, a red or white patch on the tongue that doesn’t go away, a persistent sore throat, a sore spot or ulcer on the tongue that doesn’t go away, and unexplained bleeding from the tongue.

Although any of these symptoms could be caused by something much less serious than tongue cancer, the charity urged people to get themselves checked if they have any concerns.

Going for cancer screening in Surrey will give you peace of mind and ensure that if this is the diagnosis, that you’re given the best-possible treatment as soon as possible.

Cancer Research UK also advises people to have regular dental check ups, because these can often pick up early signs of tongue and other mouth cancers.

Last year, a study by the charity revealed that men are twice as likely as women to be diagnosed with oral cancer, which includes cancers of the tongue, mouth, lips, tonsils and middle part of the throat.
