When you’ve been making new year’s resolutions for 2018, have any of them covered your teeth or oral hygiene?

One website believes we should all be taking better care of our teeth and mouths in general, and has offered some advice on how to improve your oral care regime this year.

Many of the recommendations made by Therabreath are simple to implement, such as regularly replacing your toothbrush throughout the year and making sure you floss every time you brush.

Without using floss, you won’t remove all the small food particles from between your teeth and you won’t be able to eliminate all the plaque that builds up on your teeth. Failing to do this regularly means the plaque hardens and turns into tartar, the website notes.

Another top tip is to think carefully about your dietary choices - foods high in refined sugar or carbohydrates can have a host of negative effects, including causing cavities and helping bad bacteria thrive, which in turn can lead to bad breath.

It’s also worth cutting back on the amount of alcohol you drink and if you smoke, doing your best to quit as tobacco stains the teeth, not to mention potentially resulting in gum disease and oral cancer.

The final piece of advice from the site is to schedule regular appointments with your dentist to make sure that any issues you might have are dealt with promptly.

If you’re worried about your risk of oral cancer, book an appointment for cancer screening in Surrey to make sure everything is healthy.

According to Cancer Research UK, 11,400 new cases of head and neck cancer were diagnosed in 2014, with 50 per cent of these in people over the age of 65.
