Laser Treatments

What is GentleMax?

GentleMax is a fast, reliable and effective treatment for the removal of unwanted hair and can also provide solutions for leg and facial veins, fine lines, wrinkles and vascular and pigmented lesions, skin tightening and rejuvenation.

Renowned by dermatologists and cosmetic specialists across the world it boasts dual wavelengths and is the fastest on the market.

Laser Hair Removal

At estetica we offer expert laser hair removal through a process called ‘Selective Photothermolysis’.  Laser light via the GentleMax laser machine is passed through the skin and is absorbed by pigment in the hair follicle.  The heat generated by the laser and light both injures the follicle and inhibits future growth all whilst leaving the skin unharmed.  A course is required.

(Consultation and test patch required)

How does it work?

GentleMax shines a high-intensity laser beam deep into the skin tissue, delivering a tightly controlled burst of therapeutic heat to the target area, while the patented Dynamic Cooling Device protects the upper layers of skin with a gust of cooling cryogen. Together, the long-pulse laser and DCD offer optimal treatment with minimal side effects.

What can I expect during treatment?

Treatment will take place in-clinic at estetica where safety and comfort is paramount.  You will be provided with specialist eye shields in order to protect your eyes.  Each pulse of laser will be directed at the target area by your practitioner via a small hand piece.  This will be followed by a burst of cooling spray.

Does it hurt?

Some patients may feel a slight discomfort with each laser pulse, sometimes described as being akin to the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. This discomfort disappears in a matter of seconds. For all patients a topical anaesthetic is used prior to treatment. Your practitioner is available to answer any questions you have about the procedure.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients require between four and six sessions, but the number will depend on the type of treatment you need and the condition of your skin.

How do I prepare for treatment?

Your skin should be thoroughly cleansed and dried, removing any makeup, creams, oils, topical anaesthetics or self-tanning products before laser treatment. Patients should not have a sun tan on the intended treatment area. If you have had a history of perioral herpes, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed.

What precautions should I take after treatment?

Following treatment, patients should take care to avoid exposure to the sun, wearing sun-block, factor 30 or above. Your practitioner may advise additional precautions and you will be provided with these after your treatment.

GentleMax is suitable for use on all skin types, including darker skin.

Laser Red Vein Removal Procedure

Removing red veins using laser treatment involves the targeted use of a high intensity laser in order to heat them to the point at which they break down and can be absorbed by the body. Laser red vein removal is fast and effective with treatment times typically within the hour.

The process is much the same as for laser hair removal and carried out via the same machine.

Thread Veins

Thread veins, also often known as "spider veins", "dermal flares”, “flare veins", "capillary veins" or "broken veins", are fine veins that can be seen through the skin and tend to occur on the legs, face, cheek or nose. The tiny ones tend to be red in colour, and the larger ones purplish. These small veins are present in everyone but are not normally visible until they expand and show through the skin or the skin thins. Although unsightly they are harmless and the majority of these veins can be successfully treated.

Pigmented Lesions

Pigmented lesions are darker in colour than normal skin because melanin is abnormally concentrated in one area of the skin. Pigmented lesions could be birthmarks, flat moles, naevi or various freckles/sun spots. Some diseases and infections can also cause pigmentation of skin. Lasers work by delivering an intense beam of light that is absorbed by the melanin in the skin. This light is converted to heat and is absorbed by the targeted cells, destroying them all whilst leaving the surrounding normal skin unaffected.

Laser treatment for pigmented lesions - how does it work?

What are the risks and benefits of having laser treatment?

The results of laser treatment depend on the depth of the melanin and the colour of the lesion and are, to some degree, unpredictable. Several treatments may be required. Successfully treated lesions may recur and some lesions do not disappear completely, but will be significantly lighter in colour after treatment.

Laser treatment may make the underlying skin colour darker or lighter. If the skin is made lighter, this may be permanent. Caution is needed when treating darker-skinned people as permanent hypopigmentation (lightening) may occur. To reduce the risk of pigmentation changes, SFP 30 sunblock should be worn for at least 6 weeks after treatment, and then avoidance of excessive sun exposure for a further 6 months is highly recommended..

Blistering and crusting of skin sometimes occurs. If this happens, picking or scratching the area must be avoided in order to prevent infection and also permanent scarring.

Is there any preparation I need to know about?

Avoid the sun for 4-6 weeks before and after treatment, and during any treatment courses. You may develop hypopigmentation (white spots) after treatment if skin is tanned. The use of self- tanning products must be discontinued one week before treatment

What happens during treatment?

You and the laser practitioner will wear safety eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser light. Your practitioner will guide the laser to the treatment areas with a small handpiece. Each laser pulse may be preceded by a short pulse of cooling spray. A treatment can take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated. Often the strength of the laser pulse is changed depending on the reaction on skin and patient comfort.

Each pulse of light feels like the flick of an elastic band. Most patients do not find the treatment too painful. Local anaesthetic cream can be used.

What happens after treatment?

Immediately after the treatment, there will be redness and swelling on the treatment site which may last up to two hours or longer. The treated lesion will appear darker in colour and may look shriveled. This is normal. The area can be cooled using cold compresses. Aloe vera gel is also applied to the lasered area.

What to expect once home?

Some light crusting of the skin may occur. Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin to avoid permanent scarring. The treated area may appear brown, crusty or red for several days or one week. Once the crusting falls off, the skin underneath will be pink.

You can continue applying aloe vera gel or non-scented hypo-allergenic moisturiser to soothe any irritation and to moisturise. Treat the area gently. You may resume use of your usual creams/lotions/make-up once the irritation/redness/crusting clears. Avoid exercise for 24 hours after treatment.

Avoid sun exposure to reduce the chance of dark pigmentation. Always use sunblock (SPF 30 or higher) throughout the course of your treatment. If you do not follow this advice, you may suffer burning, blistering, scarring and permanent pigment changes.
