Founder of Rejuvenation Dentistry in New York Dr Gerry Curatola recently told Fox News about some of the most commonly held beliefs about oral hygiene that are, in fact, incorrect.
First up is that sugar causes cavities, and while he acknowledges that sugar can cause tooth decay, it’s actually acids created by ‘bad bacteria’ that are formed when you digest carbohydrates that are the foremost reason for cavities.
Another topic he tackled was teeth whitening and the fear that it can damage the enamel on your teeth.
Dr Curatola explained that some over-the-counter products, if used too frequently and incorrectly, can indeed damage tooth enamel, but that teeth whitening as a procedure is safe.
“The safest teeth whitening is done under the supervision of a dentist or a dental hygienist in a dental office,” he asserted.
